A writer is a writer not because she writes well and easily, because she has amazing talent, because everything she does is golden. In my view, a writer is a writer because even when there is no hope, even when nothing you do shows any sign of promise, you keep writing anyway.

To the white guys on the beach yelling, “China! Filipino! Japanese? Beautiful Asians!” at us from across the street… To all the white girls who tell us, “You’re so lucky! I just want to be dark like you.” To that one white guy who wrote a paper on genocide in our country and told us, “…you probably won’t understand it.”

Fuck you. Fuck your fetishization, white privilege, and racism.

Linda and Lenée. Best friends. Cambodian girls. Forever angry.

Conversation with Sebastian (6 year old two-spirit child that I co-parent)
              • I picked Sebastian up from kindergarten. They were the first child to exit the classroom, they popped out and I said "Hola mi amor." They ran to me and I kissed them. Another parent came to say greet us and invite us to a play date and referred to Sebastian as "he," I agreed to tell my sister about it (she's Sebas's mama) and said "and Sebas uses they pronouns now" (this is a rad parent). Sebas said "Hey! Who told you?" Your mama I answered back. Here is the conversation we had in the car.
              • Me: M'ijo you are using "they" now do you wanna tell me more about that?
              • Sebastian: You 'ready knew! But, I heard mama call you "they" when you were in the bafroom and then heard you tell an amigo that you were a "they" cuz' you feel like a boy an' girl and I feel like a boy an' girl too.
              • Me: Thanks chiquito, well m'ijo our people were Indios who thought people like us have magic. Now people like us who are both boy and girl, man and woman are called "two spirit" because we are people of the land and we carry both boy and girl energy.
              • Sebastian: You mean magic like super powers?
              • Me: Yeah kind of like super powers, we have magic and can use it to love a lot.
              • Sebastian: Like powers like how much you love me? Like I can love people as much as you love me?
              • Me: Yes, m'ijo exactly.

                  Bedlam (2009)

the south end is a hood
in the hoods there are boys
                  the boys call themselves dogs
                  dogs run in packs

in the hoods there are boys
                  some call them hoodlums
                  dogs run in packs
                  lay their heads in beds

                  some call them hoodlums
                  really they’re kids
                  lay their heads in beds
in the hoods that are bedlam

                  really they’re kids
just doing what they know best
in the hoods that are bedlam
                  where summertime means war

just doing what they know best
                  bangin, slangin, pimpin hustlin
                  where summertime means war
                  where winters are cold

                  bangin, slangin, pimpin hustlin
                  this city’s no different from
                  where winters are cold
                  dogs run in packs

                  this city’s no different from
                  any american city
                  dogs run in packs
                  power’s in the cops

                  any american city
                  with gangs on the streets
                  power’s in the cops
                  who sells us guns

                  with gangs on the streets
                  drugs in the bloodstream
                  who sells us guns
makes it so our hoods are bedlam

                  drugs in the bloodstream
                  our kids on the streets
makes it so our hoods are bedlam
                  and the cycle just repeats
